Obituary

His infectious personality, generous heart, and genuine love for others will never be forgotten.

Joshua John “Josh” Gillis, 36, of Tifton, Georgia, passed away on July 23, 2026. Born and raised in Tifton, Josh was a beloved son, father, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend whose kind spirit and joyful personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Josh was born to Carrie Willis Saunders and John Stephen “Steve” Gillis. Above all else, he was a proud and devoted father to his beloved son, Draysen Gillis, who was the greatest joy of his life. He was also the loving brother of Tristyn Levi Dunn, with whom he shared a special bond.

Josh was a dedicated employee at Sanderson Farms in Adel, Georgia, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment. He took pride in providing for his family and approached his work with the same determination that he brought to every aspect of his life. A 2008 graduate of Tift County High School, Josh proudly played the drums in the school band. His love for music continued well beyond graduation. A talented self-taught drummer, he recently learned to play the handpan (harmonic drum), finding peace and joy through his music. Josh had many interests that reflected his adventurous and creative spirit. He enjoyed skateboarding, Taekwondo, collecting shoes, dressing with style, and spending quality time with his family and friends. Anyone who knew Josh knew he always looked his best, smelled great, and carried himself with confidence. He had an incredible ability to make people smile, laugh, and feel welcomed. His infectious personality, generous heart, and genuine love for others will never be forgotten.

Josh was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Eddie Lee Willis and Grace Willis Cook of Omega, Georgia; his paternal grandparents, John Gillis and Laura M. Gillis of Adrian, Georgia; and his uncles, Daniel Ivan Yancey of Ty Ty, Georgia, and Danny Keith White of Tifton, Georgia.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his beloved son, Draysen Gillis; his loving mother, Carrie Willis Saunders of Omega, Georgia; his father, John Stephen “Steve” Gillis; his brother, Tristyn Levi Dunn of Omega, Georgia; his aunts, Pam Willis White of Enigma, Georgia, Teresa Willis Yancey of Tifton, Georgia, Janet Yung of Vinalhaven, Maine, and Pam Gillis of St. Petersburg, Florida; his uncle, Michael Lee Willis of Omega, Georgia; his grandfather, James Franklin Cook; his cousins, Ryan Keith White, Mitchell White, Zach White, Drew White, and Dylan Yancey; along with a host of extended family members, coworkers, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Josh’s life was a reminder that life is not measured by the number of years we live, but by the love we give, the joy we bring to others, and the memories we leave behind. Though his time on earth was far too short, his legacy of love, laughter, music, and unwavering devotion to his son will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A public viewing and visitation will be held on July 31, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Eagles Wings Judah Worship Center, 2915 Southern Ave, Tifton, GA 31794. A Celebration of Life service will take place at the same location on August 1, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Joshua are warmly invited to join in honoring his memory.

In our grief, we hold tightly to the love Joshua gave so freely. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit endures in the hearts of all who loved him.
